I was standing at the starting line, looking around for David, but he
was nowhere to be found. The start was manic with almost 100 starting
at the same time. Our class, Mens C, had 51 starters alone.
I picked my way up through the field after a slow start and felt much
better than my first CX race 3 weeks ago. I found that it's difficult
to pass in the tight corners, and you would often get stuck behind
someone. It seems best to go like hell in the straights and pass as
many as possible before the turns.
At the end of the 3rd lap, Dave rode up beside me and said "hey". So
we drafted a bit and passed a couple more guys. With a half mile
left, in the sand my chain jumped off the small cog on the cassette
and wedged into the frame. About 6 guys passed me as I wrestled with
my piece of crap bike. I passed 2 or 3 guys back before the finish
line. Great fun! Wish yall were there.
Excellent job to David for coming back after a bad start and working
his way up through 50 or so riders.
