We're working with the Salem Recreation Department
to promote mountain biking over the course of a six-week program.
On
Saturdays, from 10-12, we meet with kids at one of the local
parks in Salem to teach them safe cycling methods and skills
that will help them become better mountain bikers.
The first meeting, held May 17th at Mack
Park was preceded by a weekend clean-up and trail building
day. The team hauled bags and bags of trash and broken glass
from the trails and the result is an excellent 1-mile loop
that is perfect for everything from teaching new riders some
basic skills all the way up to (one day) hosting top-level
cyclocross races. More on the 'cross races later.
For the first day, we had kids ride the loop
as a group and stop at various areas to learn the best way
to get through, over, or around. We also set up man-made obstacles
(like mini teeter-totters) and had slow races.
Hopefully everyone had fun and the program
will grow.
The program is open to kids between 11 and
15 but other ages may be able to participate--the Salem Rec
Dept can answer questions. Give 'em a call at 978-744-0180
or send us an e-mail.
