Lynn Woods Offroad Relay Run (2.5m run x 4)

(starting top left, then clockwise) Jean, Allie, Stephanie, and Kristen

Results are up from the August 20th Lynn Woods Relay race.

Here's what some of the runners had to say and what they looked like...

Jean St. Pierre
I haven't run all season due to a number of injuries. So, I have been looking forward to the relay, but more from a cheering standpoint. Then, I started to think . . .hey, I'm feeling pretty good . . .why not run too?! I asked my therapist, he gave the green light, and I was in!

Unlike previous years, I didn't worry about the race. I was just looking forward to running again! I had recruited a woman's team: Ali, me, Stephanie and Kristen. Ali went out first, and I did my warm up. She trotted back in good time, and I was off. Ali later told me how happy I looked when I started.

I didn't know what to expect--I haven't run outside or for more than 7 minutes at a stretch (per my therapist). But, I figured I would just go as far as I could, then speed walk back if I had to. I ran up the hill, got my heart rate up to 172, and it pretty much stuck there for the rest of the race. I think it peaked at 182--ack! Although my heartrate monitor indicated I was working hard, I felt great. Except for the heat, which was unbearable! The humidity was extreme, the air felt thick. There was no breeze. There was no relief, even under the trees.

Long story short, I ran the whole distance, with NO PAIN. No burning IT pain. No grinding pain in my knee. I honestly can only remember one other race where these issues didn't plague me. I wish they where all like that...

Looking forward to the 2004 season!

Wow--it was H-O-T. Anyway, the heat started before the race even began, as Arsen was calling to taunt me... "You're going down, neighbor."

Gets me wondering again why all of my friends are out to get me... Anyway, through my good graces, I still took Arsen to the race, and happily, Jean, as she made her return to racing (after badgering her physical therapist into giving her permission).

Arsen and I squared off together, thinking that we might duplicate our finish at the relay last year when we crossed the line at the same time. Unfortunately (for me) Arsen set off on a pace a little too fast, and that and the heat really got to me. When I started getting chills, I decided it was time to slow down and let him go. By the time I felt like I could run again, about a minute had passed and I ended up crossing the line about 45 seconds behind my mortal enemy. He won that battle, but the war of the 'hood will rage on.

That's a lot of drama for an 18:00 minute race, huh?!

I was psyched to have so many of us out at the race--see ya next week!

Tim, leading the pack!

Go Doug, Go!

Matt and Tony take off together due to some "technical difficulties" with one of their team mates.

Jean (left) and Allie of the Cranky Women!

Pepper and Zippy...

Roz (above) was too fast for my camera, and Rob (right) confused everyone by shaving before the race... Tim said, if Rob hadn't been late, he wouldn't have recognized him...

Aw... the happy couple...
And the bitter rivals!
