We
woke up to reports of snow and freezing rain. How I love racing
in New England! Despite the weather, Jean and I, along with
about 5,000 other cold souls, lined up for the annual Feaster
Five road run. About half of the field did a 5K, and the other
a 5M.
The
course was noteworthy only for the long uphill climb as we
approached the first mile. It’s evil to do that to people,
and runners were suffering just minutes into the race. Another
factor that kept us on our toes was the ever-changing road
conditions, from just wet, to snowy, to icy. All in all though,
with that many runners, there was always someone to catch
you if you fell!
I’m
not a fast runner, but I like the thrill of starting near
the back and passing all of the other non-fast runners. That’s
what I did this day, and ended up pulling an 5M PR of 41:36
(like I said, not fast). My time was good enough to land me
497th out of more than 2,000, and 113th out of 287 in the
competitive Men’s 30-39 category.
As I crossed the line, amid the cheers of
thousands of adoring fans (?!), the weather just started to
turn more to rain. It was time to get my free apple pie (a
tradition at this race), and head back to the car.
