Weather
never ceases to amaze me. I love the fact that I can leave
my house and simply be “cold,” and then drive
a little more than an hour away and be “freezing cold,”
and covered with snow. That’s what happened early one
morning when I dragged my buddy and my father-in-law to a
cyclocross race in Sterling, MA. The race, round 4 of the
Verge New England Cyclocross Championship Series, was just
a fun diversion for me. I try to do at least one or two ‘cross
races a year, category C, simply for the fun of it.
It’s interesting that people find riding
as hard as you can across snow & ice covered courses,
with frozen fingers and toes, and icicles in the beard “fun.”
But it is. My results aren’t worthy of mention. Suffice
it to say that I didn’t crash, I didn’t come in
last, and with my hardtail mtb, I beat enough ‘cross
racers on expensive ‘cross bikes to feel good about
the endeavor.
The best parts of the day were that I made
another ‘cross racer out of Jay Curry, and that my father-in-law
thinks I’m even crazier than before. And the giant hot
chocolate I got on the way home!
